The Commonwealth Department of Health and Ageing has opened applications for organisations to establish Medicare Locals.  A key component of the Australian Government’s National Health Reforms, Medicare Locals will improve access to services and drive integration across general practice and primary health care by coordinating services and working closely with Local Hospital Networks to identify and address local needs.

A total of $477 million over four years will be provided to establish a national network of Medicare Locals across Australia.

Approximately 15 Medicare Locals will commence in July 2011. A further 15 will commence in January 2012¸ with the remainder starting in July 2012.
